Despite the passage of legislation that could lead to TikTok's ban in the United States, the popular social media app is not immediately disappearing from phones.
On Tuesday, President Biden signed into law a bill that would prohibit the use of TikTok in the US unless the Chinese-owned company sells its operations to an American company. However, the law gives TikTok until November 2024 to comply, so the app will remain available for now.
In addition, the law allows the president to extend the deadline by an additional 90 days. This means that TikTok could potentially be blocked in early 2025, but the exact timing is uncertain.
The legislation passed the House of Representatives on Wednesday, giving TikTok two options: sell its US operations or face a ban. The bill passed with a 242-184 vote, with all Democrats and 26 Republicans supporting it.
The Senate had previously passed a similar measure in December 2023, but the final bill signed by President Biden includes some amendments made by the House.
The Trump administration attempted to ban TikTok in 2020, citing national security concerns. However, those efforts were blocked by the courts.
The Biden administration has taken a more nuanced approach, expressing concerns about TikTok's data security but stopping short of an outright ban.
TikTok has denied that it poses a national security threat and has said that it does not share user data with the Chinese government.
