Mount Merapi Erupts, Sending Lava and Gas Clouds Down Slopes

Evacuations Ordered as Volcanic Activity Intensifies in Indonesia

Updated: 4:27 PM PDT January 21, 2024

YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Mount Merapi, Indonesia's most active volcano, erupted violently on Wednesday, sending a river of lava and gas clouds pouring down its slopes. The eruption sparked evacuations as volcanic activity intensified across the country.

According to the Indonesian Geological Agency, the eruption began at 3:30 AM local time. Lava flows extended approximately 3,000 meters (9,850 feet) down the volcano's southern flank, while searing gas clouds descended through the surrounding valleys.

Authorities have ordered the evacuation of thousands of residents in the vicinity of the volcano. Mount Merapi has a long history of major eruptions, with previous events causing significant damage and loss of life.

The eruption follows a recent spike in volcanic activity in Indonesia. Other active volcanoes, including Mount Semeru and Mount Sinabung, have also erupted in recent weeks, forcing the evacuation of additional communities.

The Indonesian government is closely monitoring volcanic activity and is providing support to affected areas. Officials urge residents in at-risk areas to follow evacuation orders and heed warnings from emergency responders.
